Give breath to children who suffer from respiratory disorders

Since 2012, the Breath Giving Portraits Project, in cooperation with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, has brought awareness to the hardships of children restricted by symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis.

Why This Project Matters

7 million children in the United States suffer from pediatric pulmonology related diseases. As a result, children spend a significant amount of time in the hospital being treated for their illness. Children miss school, family gatherings, and time playing with friends. While the prospect of taking a family photo sounds exciting, imagine a mother and father having to make the difficult decision to take a photo without their little guy or princess because the wheezing is too severe to discharge them from the hospital. Even more disheartening is the inability to afford a family photo because the hospital bills and cost of outpatient care is too overwhelming.

How It Happens

Working with other photographers, make-up artist, and stylist we will give the families of children suffering with respiratory disorders a moment to catch their breath. This winter we will be visiting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and organize family photos for children admitted to the division of Pediatric Pulmonology. The families of these children will be invited to a photo shoot where they will have a group family photo session with professional photographers. These photographers, make-up artist, and stylist come together to donate their skills and give back to the community.

Volunteer contributions also go towards purchasing materials for prints, make-up kits for beauty touch up, glass frames to place the photos in, food, and activities for the families and volunteers to enjoy throughout the day. The photos will be printed and given to the families the same day.

  • One-time-use make-up kits are necessary to prevent cross infection.

At the conclusion of the photo shoot, additional prints will be provided to the hospital to be shown in a gallery located in the hospital wing of their choice. Help us breathe new hope into the lives of families by way of giving them breath-taking family photos.

More About the Breath Giving Portraits Project

Everyone aims to take at least one “breath taking” photo or selfie in the lifetime. But the Breath Giving Portraits Project team aims to take photos that give back. You don’t have to be a doctor to care about pediatric respiratory health. Volunteer groups traditionally consist of individuals with expertise in editorial, commercial, and stock photography. Past volunteers work full time at companies like Warner Bros®, The Walt Disney Company®, Aureus Medical School, Santa Barbara Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Los Angeles Fire Department. We all enjoy breathing, and the BGP endeavors to do the following:

  • Bringing awareness to respiratory diseases that affect children from birth through the age of 21
  • Bring some normalcy to the daily activities of pediatric pulmonology patients who otherwise would not be included in holiday family photos.
  • Contribute monetarily to research related to respiratory diseases like asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and congenital lung abnormalities.

The Breath Giving Portraits Project is open to any organization, or division of an organization, whose primary responsibility is to bring awareness to and offer children comprehensive treatment of congenital, inherited and acquired disorders of the lungs and respiratory system.
