Children’s Hospital – Breath Giving Portraits
“To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.”
–Henri Cartier-Bresson
Give breath to children who suffer from respiratory disorders. 7 million children in the United States suffer from pediatric pulmonology related diseases. As a result, children spend a significant amount of time in the hospital being treated for their illness. Children miss school, family gatherings, and time playing with friends. While the prospect of taking a family photo sounds exciting, imagine a mother and father having to make the difficult decision to take a photo without their little guy or princess because the wheezing is too severe to discharge them from the hospital. Even more disheartening is the inability to afford a family photo because the hospital bills and cost of outpatient care is too overwhelming.
Working with other photographers, make-up artist, and stylist we will give the families of children suffering with respiratory disorders a moment to catch their breath. This winter we will be visiting our local Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and take pictures of children admitted to the division of Pediatric Pulmonology. The families of these children will be invited to a photo shoot where they will have a group family photo session with professional photographers. These photographers, make-up artist, and stylist come together to donate their skills and give back to the community.
