D'Andre Lampkin Williams v State of California

On the 20-year anniversary of his high school graduation, D’Andre Lampkin returned to Washington Preparatory High School located in South Los Angeles to share his inspiring journey with current students. He engaged in open and honest discussions about the experiences and challenges he faced while growing up in a neighborhood plagued by gangs and gun violence. Lampkin fearlessly tackled the obstacles that came his way, determined to create a better future for himself and his community.

Notably, he played a pivotal role as one of the 12 key plaintiffs in “The Williams Case” (Eliezer Williams, et al., vs. State of California, et al), advocating for improved school conditions. The Williams Case was a landmark Superior Court case to provide all students equal access to instructional materials, safe schools, and quality teachers.

Lampkin’s experiences as a youth and his unwavering commitment to public service have deeply shaped his current roles. His return to Washington Preparatory High School acted as a powerful reminder to the students that they have the ability to overcome any adversity they may face and make a positive impact in their own lives and communities.

The case was settled in 2004, resulting in the state allocating $138 million in additional funding for standards-aligned instructional materials for schools in the first and second ranks (known as deciles) determined through the 2003 Academic Performance Index (API) Base. As a result of the Williams case, the CDE proposed changes to the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) template that all schools must update and publish annually.
