As we approach Memorial Day, it is important to take a moment to pause and reflect on the significance of this solemn day. While many may view it as a time for barbecues and gatherings, it is essential to remember that Memorial Day is a time to honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

These brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our country’s safety and sovereignty, and their memory should be honored and respected. It is a time to pay tribute to their courage, dedication, and selflessness.

In addition, I want to take a moment to remember those members of the U.S. military who died after choosing to continue to serve well beyond their obligated term of service. Brave veterans like LeRoy Wilton Homer Jr, the First Officer of United Airlines Flight 93, who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. LeRoy chose to heroically ground Flight 93, preventing the hijackers from using it as a weapon and potentially saving countless lives.

Officer Jacob Derbin, a dedicated public servant and Army National Guard veteran, tragically lost his life while responding to a disturbance call in Euclid, Ohio. Sworn in to the Euclid Police Department just months before his untimely death, Officer Derbin exemplified courage, dedication, and selflessness in his service to the community. His sacrifice is a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day in the line of duty.

Their actions are a testament to the unwavering commitment and bravery of our U.S. military personnel, even long after their official service had ended. We must never forget their sacrifice and always honor their memory.

As we observe Memorial Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the lives of these brave individuals and express our gratitude for their service. May we never forget their sacrifice and may their memory live on in our hearts forever.

Thank you for joining us in commemorating the significance of Memorial Day.
