Tonight I am saddened to announce the passing of my dear friend David Stelmach (pictured kneeling in forward). I first met David in 2012 as I struggled to get my non-profit, the Breath Giving Portraits Project, off the ground. I was unsuccessful in my first attempt to raise money and decided to try again by funding everything out of pocket. When most of my friends made empty promises to help, David was one of a handful of talented individuals who donated their time and talents to insure the project’s success.

Ten years ago David was diagnosed with cancer and beat it after a stem cell transplant. After 8 years of remission, two years ago the cancer returned. He fought like a warrior and never complained once. According to friends and family, “He truly loved being a part of this project and always wanting to be a part of something greater than himself.” Unbeknowst to me, the Breath Giving Project would be one of his many last random acts of kindness and gifts to the world.

He believed in the Breath Giving Portraits Project and his efforts spoke volumes about the kind of person he truly is. His warm approach made every child smile and his impecable timing with his camera shutter made every family gleam with reassurance that the holidays are a time to be enjoyed by all regardless of their childs inability to leave the ICU or financial situation.

Please join me and the Breath Giving Portraits Project family in not only celebrating David‘s life, but also in saying “Thank You” for being the great human being that we have come to know and love.

We’ll miss you David.
